Family: Rosaceae
Scientific name: Prunus cerasifera

The cherry plum is a plum variety with small, tart fruit that resembles a cherry. Its main use is for ornamental purposes, due to the dark purple color of its leaves and its high resistance to various soil types and weather conditions. The tree originates from Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The fruit is small and sour, but edible, and can be used to produce various liqueurs. The plant is often used as a rootstock for other plum varieties.

Orlah & neta revay (waiting three years for fruit & fourth-year trees): The orlah prohibition applies only to fruit-bearing trees and not to trees intended for other purposes, such as for fencing or ornamental use. Therefore, if the tree is planted for ornamental purposes and the intent is clear from the way it is planted, orlah prohibitions do not apply. However, if planted also for the fruit, the tree is subject to the laws of orlah and neta revay.
