Hebrew: כַּנַּת אָבוֹקָדוֹ אַשְׁדוֹת יַעֲקֹב Family: Lauraceae Scientific Name: Persea americana Parentage: Avocado Country of Origin: Israel
This avocado strain is used as rootstock for avocado trees. There are many strains of this rootstock, the most common being Ashdot 17 (the dominant variety) and Ashdot 9. The rootstock produces edible fruit, though it is smaller and less flavorful than commercial avocado varieties. The rootstock is used for its seeds and branches in propagation.
The first tree was brought to Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov after the establishment of the State of Israel. Initially cultivated by a kibbutz member, this rootstock has since become the leading avocado rootstock in Israel and worldwide.
Kilei ilan (grafting mixed species): Avocado trees can only be grafted onto other avocado species. Consequently, there is currently no issue of forbidden grafts.
Orlah (waiting three years for fruit): While technically a fruit tree, the orlah prohibition applies only to the use of the fruit, not of the branches. Therefore, the branches may be used for grafting. However, three orlah years must pass before using the seeds for propagation.
